Shinoda-no-Mori Kuzunoha Inari Shrine, which is located in Izumi-city, has a folklore. It is a legend of Abe no Seimei, a famous onmyoji or a diviner, and his mother, Kuzu-no-Ha. In the story, it is said that she tore herself out of her son’s grasp and returned into the forest in her real shape, a white fox. That’s the scene Utagawa Hiroshige took. I took the same scene. I have drawn kudzu leaves, which Kuzu-no-Ha mean, as a pattern for her kimono. The white fox slipping out of there has been added. I have made the work in black so that mother love left for her boy should be focused.

Kuzu-no-Ha’s farewell poem: "Koishiku ba / tazunekite miyo / izumi naru / shinoda no mori no / urami kuzunoha."
